Return-to-Play
Coaching
You’ve been cleared from your concussion concussion, so why are you still so stressed?
Clinical clearance for concussion requires you to be symptom free at rest and symptom free with physical activity. In most states, that includes completion of a 5-stage return-to-play (RTP) exertion protocol. Many athletes pass this protocol without issue, but find that they are not quite themselves when they actually return to sport. This is a normal experience! If you’ve passed the clinical tests, we can be pretty sure that your brain has healed, which means it is safe to engage in sports, but sometimes the mental aspect of recovering from injury isn’t captured on those tests. Many athletes worry about getting re-injured, struggle to fit back in with their teammates, and struggle with the emotional experience of not being part of the team for weeks or months. Return-to-play coaching can help you or your loved one to identify what is holding them back and develop the skills necessary to move forward safely and successfully.

Our first session will be a time to get to know one another and to develop a plan for future sessions. All sessions will be goal-oriented, incorporating a mix of skills-based training with integration of thoughts and feelings regarding the athlete’s return to norml life.

Of course! If you and your athlete are more comfortable with a parent present, that is just fine. Some athletes prefer to be 1:1 and bring parent in at the beginning and/or end of sessions. It’s all up to the parent and athlete, but I will give my advice if I think we need to change things up.
